The notion of common or public property rights in one's own likeness is complicated by intellectual property law which both promotes free and uncompensated comment but does allow limited commercial exploitation by protecting certain rights. Hence, OJ Simpson is being sued by his creditors (the family of one of his murder victims) to gain any profit Mr. Simpson is making from the use of his name.
