Winston Churchill - The best British political insults and putdowns
"He would make a drum out of the skin of his own mother in order to sound his own praises."
Winston Churchill traded insults with most politicians, including Lloyd George, whom he dubbed "the happy warrior of Squandermania". But former Liberal Prime Minister's verdict on the only other man to lead Britain during a World War is equally snide. Churchill's own caustic wit, and ability to make a comeback quip, was sometimes aimed at women. When berated for being drunk by MP Bessie Braddock, Churchill said: "My dear, you are ugly, but tomorrow I shall be sober, and you will still be ugly." In a similar vein, he had a spat with Lady Astor, who said "if you were my husband, I'd poison your tea." Churchill replied: "Madam, if you were my wife, I'd drink it."
