It’s Fourth of July weekend! After the Revolution was (mostly) won, it came time for America to think about what kind of nation it would (or should) be and who was going to run it. William Maclay, for one, was concerned with the character of the United States, starting with the most pressing issue—what to call George Washington, the man who would not be king?
