Good morning and happy Tuesday, bud. Are you tired after last night's six-hour college football championship? Yeah? OK, great. Me too. Honestly, we both deserve high civilian honors for even waking up before noon today. Who do I need to yell at to get these title games to start at least two hours earlier?
Anyway, if you can keep you eyes open long enough, we've got plenty of news to cover after a wild start to the week. Not only did we get the national title game but we also were gifted the chaos of a dramatic baseball controversy in the hours leading up to kickoff. Pretty solid start to the week for sports distractions.
Hopefully the rest of the week can live up to the bar Monday set. Let's get to the rundown.
1. Joe Burrow, LSU ride to national title
Heading into Monday night's College Football Championship , we knew a few things with absolute certainty. One was that the Tigers would end up as national champions. The other was that the Tigers would end up as disappointed runner-ups.
As it turns out, it was the LSU Tigers who came out on top as they capped a perfect season with an emphatic 42-25 win over the Clemson Tigers in the title game.
  • It's LSU's first national championship since 2007.
  • Clemson held a 17-7 lead in the second quarter.
  • Joe Burrow put up 463 passing yards and six touchdowns against no turnovers.
  • Clemson's loss snaps a 29-game win streak for the program.
With the win, LSU puts a bow on one of the most impressive college football seasons in history, one that was highlighted by possibly the greatest season from a college football quarterback... ever. Our Dennis Dodd makes the case for Burrow's season being the GOAT, but you may not even need to look much further than this list:
  • National champion
  • Set title game record with 6 touchdowns
  • Heisman winner
  • First QB to have 60 passing touchdowns
  • Most total TDs in a season (65)
  • Set a new SEC record with 5,671 passing yards
On top of all that, Burrow is expected to go No. 1 in this year's NFL Draft, so that's not a bad year, I guess. I mean, it's fine. I won $14 on a scratcher and also got an oil change for half price this month so I'd say we're both king of thriving right now.
